Panel-based, culture-independent approaches greatly strengthened our understanding of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases

The enhanced capabilities offered by panel-based sequencing approaches show considerable promise in public health microbiology. In Australia, we have found many areas where panel-based, culture-independent approaches have greatly strengthened our understanding of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. Many of these will be presented here, including respiratory viral detection and genotyping, as well as recovery of genomes from uncultivable organisms in patient and environmental samples. The data generated can be highly informative and actionable in a public health response.
