How synthesis of putative ancestral gene sequences is expanding studies in the field of molecular evolution
Discussion of 3 examples from the lab looking at 3 different facets of protein evolution

Gene synthesis technology has underpinned the expansion of studies in the field of molecular evolution by allowing putative ancestral gene sequences to be reconstructed and experimentally characterized. I will discuss three examples of such studies from my laboratory, where it has allowed us to better understand the evolution of ligand binding specificity, the evolution of catalytic activity and the evolution of protein dynamics.
